The Finer Points of Acupuncture with Dr. Kim Lentz

Did you know that we now offer acupuncture for your pets?

Acupuncture involves placing tiny, flexible needles at specific points which stimulate the body’s own healing capabilities to treat & manage illness. Acupuncture treatments help release endorphins (the body’s own painkillers), increase circulation and decrease inflammation, and blunt pain signals to and from the brain.

What is acupuncture used for? Acupuncture can be a useful addition for treating any type of pain. Two common problems that acupuncture can be helpful for are arthritis and intervertebral disc disease. Urinary bladder issues, chronic respiratory and chronic gastrointestinal diseases can also be improved with acupuncture. It is typically used alongside medications as part of a comprehensive management plan rather than as a stand alone treatment.

How do most pets do during a treatment? We use yummy treats and a soothing environment to minimize stress during appointments. Most pets will minimally react to needle placement, some pets even fall asleep with needles in!

How long does a treatment session last? Our goal is typically 20 minutes with the needles in place. Each appointment is scheduled for 30 minutes total.__

How many treatments does it take until results are seen? That varies with the patient and the particular issue that are being addressed. Average is 3-5 treatments.

What’s a typical treatment schedule? This varies as well but a typical initial schedule is 1-2 treatments per week for 3-4 weeks then slowly increasing the time between treatments depending upon how the patient is doing.
